SBIR and STTR Funding Bill Extension Being Considered this Week

SBIR Funding ImageThe Office of Technology administers the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program to provide funding to small and fledgling biotechnology and genomics businesses. These programs are currently scheduled to sunset in September, but this week an extension is being considered that would take the programs through September 2012, according to the article I just saw in the GenomeWeb News email that I just received. You can read more about the program here.

Now you may be wondering “Who Cares?”…

but let me tell you, I do! I’ve worked for some companies (including OpenHelix) doing cool things that couldn’t have happened nearly so well w/out this funding. A while back I went to an SBIR grant writing class run by NIH and I was AMAZED by how much help these guys are willing to give small business owners in order for them to succeed at getting SBIR/STTR funding. I mean, how often have you felt like singing the praises of a government agency & telling everyone you know how ‘nice’ they are. With tax season just having passed, I think we can all agree the feeling is rare. AND they WANT to give money to scientists…

OK, I should get back to my to-do list, but before I do let me say this: Treat your SBIR friends well & if your congress person ever asks – it IS a worth while program.
