Have you been seeing those ‘Our rock stars aren’t like your rock stars’ commercials from Intel lately? Well, a recent BioTechniques post alerted me to a similar campaign focused on pairing well known ‘traditional’ rock stars with researchers working on cancer, HIV/AIDs and Alzheimer’s disease. Apparently the campaign appeared in GQ magazine in June, and is now available from a web site sponsored by Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® The campaign features several well-known rock starts such as Francis Collins, Cheryl Crow, Joe Perry, will.i.am, The hope is to make more of the general public aware of the value and funding needs of researchers, and to also show that scientists can be cool & let their hair down too. At the Rock SOS site, you can also sign a declaration with the traditional rock stars that is described as:
A star-powered line-up joined the Rock S.O.S campaign to honor the Doctors and Researchers who are saving our lives, to make science rock as a career choice for the next generation, and to raise their platinum voices in demand for future research funding.
It is a cool philosophy and effort, and a fun Friday view. Enjoy!
